What stayed the same
4Scarrs Gaming says the new game looks and feels just like The Winds of Anthos. Its visuals and core mechanics are largely unchanged, so returning players will settle in quickly. Video Chums describes the same relaxing pastel style, with more detail on newer hardware.
Both games keep 10 marriage candidates and towns with permanent seasons that you can travel between. Video Chums also says Echoes of Teradea suffers from the same early-game issues as its predecessor. If the slow start of Anthos bothered you, expect a similar opening here.
Exploration and travel
Exploration is the biggest change. Video Chums calls the map denser and more rewarding, with forageables, rare animals, statues, and hidden chests off the main path. In Winds of Anthos, the same reviewer found that wandering mostly turned up seeds.
Echoes of Teradea adds jumping at specific spots, ladders, and vines to climb. LadiesGamers reports that regions open as you revive Spirit Trees by fulfilling residents' requests, with warp statues and light-dependent caves along the way. The same review wished movement over cliffs and heights felt smoother.
Mining and animal companions
LadiesGamers says mining is much better than in Winds of Anthos. You no longer need dousing or long dungeon digs to reach silver, because gemstones are visible and can be broken apart. In Anthos, the same site found that hunting silver for the barn quest slowed early progress.
Animals play a larger role in the new game. Video Chums notes there are more of them, companions now follow you, and they gain skills through use. 4Scarrs lists animal skills, wild animal encounters, and Power Statues among the main additions.
Farm life, camping, and stamina
Winds of Anthos let you move your whole farm with the Expando-Farm to suit different climates. Echoes of Teradea instead lets you pitch a tent and camp in the wild, so you return home less often. Video Chums points out that camping grew out of the Anthos DLC upgrades.
Stamina is much more balanced than before, according to Video Chums. LadiesGamers adds a Soilbot, a Fertiliser machine, and a Feeder machine that fills animal bins. One step back is recipes, which the Video Chums reviewer found easier to discover in Winds of Anthos.
Reviews and scores compared
OpenCritic shows an 83% critics-recommend rate for The Winds of Anthos, with top-critic scores mostly around 7 out of 10. Wikipedia lists a Metacritic score of 72 for the Switch version. Reviewers praised its huge world but criticised performance and sparse areas between villages.
Early Echoes of Teradea scores on OpenCritic include 8.5 from PS4Blog, 8.3 from Video Chums, 4 out of 5 from RPGamer, and 7.9 from Pizza Fria. One review calls it a step up from its predecessor. The Outerhaven was the clear outlier, warning about frame drops on Switch 2.
Which one should you play first?
For most players, Echoes of Teradea is the better starting point because it improves the parts of Anthos that felt like a chore. Its world is fuller, mining is faster, and animals are more useful. LadiesGamers also spotted callbacks to Anthos that hint at a wider overarching story.
Winds of Anthos still makes sense if you want a cheaper game with more content already finished. Natsume released a Complete Edition with every DLC pack on May 8, 2026, and Deku Deals lists it at $29.99. Pick Anthos for value, and pick Teradea for the most polished version of this formula.
